The Regional Insights Forum (RIF) emphasizes that major powers carry a profound responsibility in maintaining international peace, stability, and respect for international law. As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council—including the United States, China, Russia, United Kingdom, and France—these states possess significant authority through the veto power granted under the United Nations Charter. With such authority comes the obligation to promote diplomacy, prevent escalation of conflicts, and safeguard the rules-based international order rather than contribute to geopolitical polarization.
RIF notes with concern that unilateral actions, excessive militarization, and unconditional political backing of controversial military campaigns—particularly those associated with the ongoing conflict involving Israel in Gaza Strip—risk undermining the credibility of global governance institutions. When great powers appear to support military approaches without sufficient regard for humanitarian consequences or international legal norms, it weakens the moral authority of the international system and erodes trust among nations.
The Regional Insights Forum calls upon the United States and other permanent members of the Security Council to exercise their influence responsibly by prioritizing diplomacy, conflict prevention, and humanitarian protection. The legitimacy of the international order depends on consistent adherence to international law, the protection of civilian populations, and the promotion of peaceful dispute resolution.
RIF believes that great powers must act not as antagonists in global politics but as custodians of international stability. Their leadership should reflect a commitment to justice, accountability, and constructive engagement, ensuring that the international system serves the cause of peace rather than the escalation of conflict.
