The Regional Insights Forum (RIF) expresses deep sorrow and strong condemnation over the reported attack by Israel on a school facility in Iran that allegedly resulted in the deaths of hundreds of innocent schoolgirls. Targeting educational institutions or civilian populations—particularly children—represents a grave violation of international humanitarian law and basic human values. Schools must remain safe spaces for learning and development, even in times of conflict, and any act that harms children in educational environments is unacceptable and demands global attention and accountability.
This tragic incident also highlights a broader and troubling pattern where girls and women become disproportionate victims of political conflict, violence, and discriminatory policies. In another context, the continued restrictions on girls’ education in Afghanistan prevent millions of young girls from exercising their fundamental right to education. Denying girls access to education represents another form of injustice that undermines human dignity, social progress, and long-term peace.
RIF calls upon the international community, including institutions such as the United Nations, to take stronger and more consistent measures to protect girls from violence and discrimination in all forms. Whether through military aggression or institutional restrictions, the victimization of girls must not be tolerated. Ensuring the safety, education, and empowerment of girls is not only a moral obligation but also a cornerstone for building peaceful, resilient, and prosperous societies.
The Regional Insights Forum urges global leaders, civil society, and international organizations to stand united in safeguarding the rights of girls everywhere and to ensure that no child becomes a casualty of political conflict, discrimination, or neglect.
